Every year on May 28, the world unites to raise awareness and take action to break the silence around menstruation. Under the global theme “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld”, the movement is working toward a future where menstruation is recognized as a normal part of life—free from stigma, with equitable access to products, education, and care.
As we approach World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025, it is fitting to reflect on the powerful strides made in 2024, particularly by Community & Youth Development Initiatives (CYDI), one of the active players in Imo State, Nigeria.
Our Impact in 2024: Mobilizing Communities and Driving Change
In 2024, CYDI, in collaboration with other members of the Imo State Technical Working Group on Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management, embarked on an ambitious and inclusive campaign to amplify menstrual health awareness. Leveraging funds generously contributed via social media fundraising and individual donors, CYDI and its partners reached hundreds of community members through a series of meaningful activities.
Key Achievements by CYDI and Partners:
- Social Media Education: Trained 13 participants (young girls and women) via a live chat on Google Meet, engaging religious groups in conversations around menstrual health.
- Community Sensitizations: Built the capacity of 69 persons (including 63 young women) across two health centers — Mgbirichi (Ohaji/Egbema) and Okohia (Isiala Mbano).
- Empowering Persons with Disabilities: Sensitized 25 people with disabilities (PWDs), including both young and adult women and men, on menstrual hygiene practices.
- Peer Educator Engagement: Reached 57 young peer educators (37 females, 20 males), equipping them to further spread accurate information in their schools and communities.
- Reusable Sanitary Pad Distribution: Distributed 130 reusable sanitary pads to students, teachers, and persons living with disabilities, easing access to menstrual materials for vulnerable groups.
These initiatives spanned from May 21 to June 5, 2024, covering schools, health centers, and community spaces. The inclusive approach of engaging males, persons with disabilities, teachers, and religious groups amplified the message of breaking stigma and ensuring menstrual equity.
Looking Ahead to 2025: Building on Momentum
As the world marches toward the shared goal of normalizing menstruation by 2030, the 2025 World Menstrual Hygiene Day continues under the banner “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.” The emphasis remains on five pillars:
- Supportive social environments
- Comprehensive menstrual education
- Access to affordable menstrual products
- Period-friendly sanitation facilities
- Quality menstrual health services
For CYDI and its network in Imo State, the focus in 2025 we will scale up successful initiatives, deepening community partnerships, and expanding access to underserved populations.
