Every year, the first Thursday of November marks the International Day Against Violence and Bullying at School, Including Cyberbullying. This UNESCO-declared observance underscores the global urgency of creating safe, inclusive learning environments for children and adolescents. This year’s theme, “Protect, Educate, Empower: A Call by Learners for Safe and Inclusive Schools,” emphasized the role of education in ending violence and amplifying learners' voices in shaping policies that directly affect their lives. The day drew attention to the widespread challenge of school-related violence and bullying, including cyberbullying, which undermines students’ health, well-being, and right to education. UNESCO called on governments, civil society, education authorities, and the tech industry to work collectively to foster safe and supportive schools where all children can thrive.
In commemoration of the 2024 observance, Community and Youth Development Initiatives (CYDI), in partnership with UNESCO and the Imo State Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, led a robust sensitization campaign across three secondary schools in Imo State—Government Secondary School, Owerri; Imo Girls Secondary School, Owerri; and Community Secondary School, Orogwe. CYDI’s Executive Director, Felxfame Enisire, emphasized the need for schools to actively discourage all forms of violence and bullying, particularly cyberbullying. During these school outreach programs, students engaged in discussions about standing up against harassment, the importance of mutual respect, and fostering empathy among peers. The sessions also explored ways to build a supportive school culture where every student feels safe, valued, and empowered to contribute positively to their learning environment.
By aligning its activities with the global theme, CYDI reaffirmed its commitment to prioritizing the safety of young people in educational settings and advancing cross-sectoral partnerships to address violence effectively. Through these engagements, CYDI amplified the voices of students and urged education leaders and policymakers to uphold their pledges to transform schools into secure, inclusive spaces. The organization continues to champion policies and practices that ensure all children have the opportunity to learn in environments free from fear, empowering them to reach their full potential in both academics and life.
