Empowering Young Voices: Peer Educators Health Club’s Annual Inauguration and Send Forth Ceremony

On Saturday, February 10th, 2024, the youthful energy of Imo State was on full display as the Peer Educators Health Club in Imo State organized their much-anticipated 1-Day Annual Inauguration and Send Forth Ceremony. This club was established by CYDI in 2004 with funding support from CEDPA Nigeria and to date the voice of the club echoes across 20 secondary schools in Imo State educating their peers on sexual reproductive health issues affecting young people. This vibrant young people used this event to inaugurate their newly elected executives and bid farewell to members who left secondary school in 2023, served as a platform for young people to advocate for crucial issues surrounding sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR). With a focus on ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in commemoration of the 2024 International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, as well as addressing other forms of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), the gathering resonated with passion and determination.

The day was filled with an array of engaging activities, showcasing the talents and dedication of the young participants. From thought-provoking quizzes to powerful dramatic performances and enlightening lectures, each segment of the event served as a conduit for spreading awareness about SRHR issues. The emphasis was not only on raising awareness but also on fostering open discussions and encouraging proactive measures to combat these pressing concerns.

At the core of the event were two key focus areas: ending Female Genital Mutilation and combating Sexual and Gender-Based Violence. Through informative sessions and interactive activities, attendees were educated about the harmful effects of FGM, the role of FGM survivors who are young people, and the importance of eradicating this practice. Moreover, discussions delved into the broader spectrum of SGBV, shedding light on its prevalence, underlying causes, and the urgent need for collective action to address it effectively. The event garnered widespread participation from various stakeholders, including parents, teachers, students from diverse schools across Imo State, and individuals with a vested interest in the well-being of young people. The presence of parents and guardians underscored the importance of community support in driving positive change. Their expressions of appreciation and encouragement served as a testament to the impactful work being carried out by the School Peer Educators.

As the event drew to a close, the sentiments echoed by parents and guardians resonated deeply with the newly inaugurated executives. They were entrusted with the responsibility of continuing the vital work of advocating for SRHR issues and ensuring the well-being of their peers. Their commitment to upholding these duties was met with resounding affirmation, as they pledged to uphold the principles of inclusivity, compassion, and resilience in their endeavors.

The 1-Day Annual Inauguration and Send Forth Ceremony organized by the School Peer Educators served as a beacon of hope and empowerment for young people in Imo State. By addressing critical issues related to sexual reproductive health and rights, the event sparked meaningful conversations and inspired tangible actions toward creating a safer and more equitable society for all.
