The 2023 International Youth Day celebrations held at Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri were a resounding success, bringing together enthusiastic young minds with a shared goal – to pave the way for a more sustainable and food-secure future for Imo State. The event, themed “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World,” was a collaborative effort between the Agric Budget Plus Cluster and The Agricultural Science Students Association of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education Owerri, reflecting the passion and dedication of the organizers towards creating a positive impact on the community.

Green Skills: The Key to Sustainability

The event emphasized the critical role of the younger generation in steering Imo State toward a sustainable future. The theme, “Green Skills for Youth,” underscored the importance of acquiring skills that benefit individuals and contribute to the overall well-being of the environment and society. The focus on agriculture was particularly relevant, given its direct connection to food security and environmental sustainability.

Addressing Food Security Challenges

One of the primary goals of the event was to mobilize young people across Imo State to take an active interest in agricultural activities. As the world faces complex challenges such as climate change, population growth, and resource limitations, ensuring food security becomes a paramount concern. By engaging the youth in agricultural practices, the event aimed to build a resilient food system that can withstand these challenges, safeguarding the availability and access to nutritious food for everyone in the state.

Empowering Imo State Youth

The 2023 International Youth Day celebrations provided a platform for participants to acquire valuable knowledge, exchange ideas, and develop practical skills related to sustainable agriculture. Workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions were organized, covering a wide range of topics including organic farming, agroecology, innovative farming techniques, and the use of technology in agriculture.

Through these activities, attendees gained insights into the latest trends and best practices in agriculture, equipping them with the tools needed to embark on successful careers in this vital sector. Additionally, the event fostered networking opportunities, allowing young people to connect with experienced professionals, mentors, and fellow enthusiasts, creating a support system for their future endeavors.

Looking Ahead

The 2023 International Youth Day celebrations at Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education Owerri marked an important milestone in the journey towards a more sustainable Imo State. By harnessing the energy and creativity of the youth, and by focusing on the essential aspects of agriculture and food security, the event laid the groundwork for a brighter and more prosperous future.

As we reflect on this year’s theme, “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World,” let us remain inspired and committed to taking positive action in our communities. With the knowledge and skills gained from this event, Imo State’s youth are well-equipped to lead the way in creating a sustainable, food-secure, and environmentally responsible future for us all. Together, we can make a difference that will resonate for generations to come.
