CYDI Mark International Day Against Violence and Bullying in Schools

The International Day Against Violence and Bullying at School, including Cyberbullying, observed on the first Thursday of every November, draws global attention to the critical importance of creating safe learning environments for young people. This year’s theme, “Protect, Educate, Empower: A Call by Learners for Safe and Inclusive Schools,” emphasizes the vital role of education in combating school-based violence and fostering inclusivity. UNESCO, as the driving force behind this initiative, underscores that the well-being of learners must be at the forefront of educational priorities. The theme also speaks to the importance of listening to learners’ voices and incorporating their insights into policies and practices that directly impact their daily lives, highlighting the urgency of tackling violence in education through meaningful partnerships and holistic approaches.

To commemorate this day, Community & Youth Development Initiatives (CYDI), in collaboration with the Imo State Ministry of Primary & Secondary Education and with funding support from UNESCO, organized a school sensitization program across three secondary schools in Imo State: Government Secondary School, Owerri; Imo Girls Secondary School, Owerri; and Community Secondary School, Orogwe. During these events, CYDI and representatives from the Ministry engaged with students on the importance of standing up against bullying, cyberbullying, and other forms of harassment. Students were encouraged to speak up about their experiences, recognize the value of mutual respect, and foster empathy toward their peers. The program also included discussions on creating a supportive school culture, where each student feels safe, valued, and empowered to contribute to a positive learning environment.

In line with this year’s theme, CYDI’s activities resonate with global commitments to prioritize the safety of young people within educational systems and to promote investment in cross-sectoral partnerships to address violence effectively. By amplifying the voices and perspectives of students, CYDI calls on educational leaders and policymakers to uphold their commitments to transforming schools into inclusive, secure spaces where all children can thrive. CYDI remains committed to advancing these goals, encouraging leaders to take decisive steps that will turn these aspirations into actionable policies, ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn in an environment free from fear and conducive to their growth and development.
